Seniors for Success

WHO? Grandparents, Retirees, and Senior Volunteers who have a little time they could give to help children in area schools

WHAT? Seniors for Success is an intergenerational program sponsored by Project Success. Volunteers work as little as one hour per week to help children by listening to them read, working with math flashcards, practicing spelling words, etc. Each volunteer is assigned to work with a teacher and a particular classroom. Some volunteers also help with classroom projects, share past experiences and hobbies, and generally give support to show the children that someone wants to help them succeed.

WHEN? Most “Seniors for Success” volunteers spend an hour each week at their assigned school. Some volunteers come several times each week, and some stay for several hours when they go. The program is very flexible and we try to work around the volunteer’s schedules. Volunteers who travel are also welcome – we just need to know when you will be gone so we can let the teachers and children know.

WHERE? Project Success can place “Seniors for Success” in almost every elementary school in the area. Volunteers can request a specific school, grade level, or teacher if they have a preference, and efforts are made to honor the requests.

WHY? There are so many children who just need an extra little push – somebody who takes an interest in them and shows them that it’s important to work hard in school. It’s fun for volunteers, and it’s great for our students!

HOW? How can you get involved? Call or email Linda Rowden, “Seniors for Success” Coordinator at Project Success, (217) 421-8074. We will be happy to answer any questions, provide more information, and hopefully sign you up!
